Trafford Maintain Winning Start
Sat 10th Oct 2009, 03:00 PM 5 Garstang - Trafford MV 22
Garstang went into the home game against Trafford MV confident that they could upset the form book and get a win against the unbeaten side. Garstang started the game strongly, and with some excellent rucking and mauling they led the way for the first quarter with the visitors knowing they were in for a tough match.
With some great scrummaging from the power houses of Dave Miller and Ben Corless Garstang had a great platform to play off. From a strong scrum a great pick up from number eight Keith Yates led a rampant charge up the field, with the backs of Max and Andy linking well with the forwards they were held up on the line.
With Garstang now confident and Paul Brown dictating the game at scrum half Trafford had to defend hard to keep the home side out, this they did and with a quick tap penalty they made some good links with the backs and opened up the scoring of the afternoon. They went into half time with a 0-7 lead for the visitors.
With some tactical team talk from coach Harvey Jones Garstang went in the second half with the same confidence to change the score line It was Trafford though who opened up and duly scored again to take it to 14 nil. Garstang kept on the pressure but Richard Orr at lock suffered an injury and was replaced by Coach Harvey Jones. Garstang upped the tempo and charged forward with some strong running from Jones from the line out who linked well with skipper John Robinson who released the ball down the wing for Riggers to sail in. With the score now 5-14 both teams played hard but it was Trafford who linked well to score in the corner and their 10 made the conversion.
After the game Jones said “Our heads were held high as we knew made the visitors play a hard game and they are top of the league, we stuck to our game plan but unfortunately could not break through, I am happy with our team spirit at the moment and am confident for the rest of the season. A special mention was made to man of the match Ainsley Pye who, as always, played hard and led from the front”
